Orangutan should become a symbol of palm oil opposition January 16, 2008

Welcome! This blog won’t be able to separate the issue of palm oil production from the issue of orangutan conservation. So I agree wholeheartedly, as you might expect, with the recent plans announced in Nature to make the orangutan the symbol of palm oil opposition.

Also check out mongabay for a great source on other environmental issues related specifically to rainforests.

One step further will be for orangutans to become the international symbol for palm-oil free products. NGOs and other interested parties are pushing for this, here’s hoping that will soon be the case.

With oil palm being grown in its native West Africa, and plans for it to be grown in Australia, then the orangutan won’t be threatened there!
